Umpiring career of Dr Gill Clarke MBE

 

Gill in action

 

  • Played first at club level (New Milton), captain of Hampshire juniors & later played for Southampton WHC and for Hampshire seniors.

  • Started umpire when commenced teaching PE at Priestlands School in Lymington, Hants, 1978 when had to possess a qualification.

  • 1988 umpired 1st international tournament (U21 level) in Paris on artificial turf.

  • 1990 promoted to Grade 1 1991 to Cuba (Pan American Games) -same year promoted World Cup & Olympic List,

  • Olympic Games ~ Barcelona ’92, Atlanta ’96, Sydney 2000, first English/British woman to umpire final (Atlanta) & at 3 Olympic Games
  • Umpired 2 World Cups (Dublin 1996, Utrecht 1998) both of which I did the final.

  • Umpired finals of both Champions Trophy and Pan American Games

  • 1st English woman to umpire 100 internationals

  • In 1999 awarded an MBE for services to women’s hockey and hockey umpiring and became the first ‘active’ umpire to receive such an award.

  • 2003 – appointed to FIH Hockey Rules Board & Umpiring Committee
